Manchester, UK
Comics in community work

In May 2005, members of voluntary and community groups in Manchester and Salford took part in the first ever World Comics workshop to take place in the UK. The event was organised by a small organization called Community Pride Initiative (CPI) which works in the area.
The participants learnt both how to make their own comics and how to train others to do so. Comics were produced on a range of topics including education, gender, community networks, gangs, bullying, government policies, the media and refugees.
After the training, the Community Comics UK network developed. They met often and facilitated several workshops. Two members of the group participated as observers in a grassroots comics workshop in Goa, in August 2005, arranged by World Comics India. Later on, in 2006, three more small workshops were organised by World Comics in Manchester, including a master class for new trainers. Now, in 2007, comics workshops on the themes of neighbourhood, identity and belonging will be arranged for disadvantaged groups in the area.
