WCI with WCF has so far conducted a number of specialized workshops on comics skill. Year 1999, was the beginning of World Comics India (WCI) initiative. Charkha development communication network was one of the main partner of WCI in these workshops. This was the time when WCI along with Charkha development communication network started intervention in visual communication WCI has so far conducted a number of specialized workshops to impart the skill of making comics.

The participants in this workshop were mainly from Chattisgarh and MP. The host organization was 'Samarthan' which works mainly on issues related to Panchayat System and already had introduced Community newspapers in the region. In this workshop comics were utilized in the community newspapers and their reach was successfully tested by a feedback from the local people.
2004 Delhi
Along with Gandhi Smriti, a 10 day summer camp on Disaster Management was organized for children from the orphanages. The children drew their ideas of tackling disasters in the form of comic stories.
2004 Bongaigaon, Assam
This workshop was organized in association with Ant and Society for Bodo Cultural Institute. Here comics were used as an initiative to inculcate reading habits in the youth. The event was highlighted in the local news by the Bodo students.

The workshop was conducted in association with Gandhi Smriti. The participants were a contingent of children heading to Pakistan to promote 'Cricket for peace'. The children were acquainted to the idea of using comics as a means to express their views and experiences.

2004 Mobile Comics Workshops
The workshop was organised over a span of 9 days during Mumbai to Kolkata and Kolkata to Hyderabad train journey which was part of the friendship tour. 40 Pakistani and Indian children and youth were the participants.

The workshop was organised along with GNK-PLAN. The participants were activists from Nepal Border. Comics were made in Bhojpuri language and dealt with issues like agriculture, self help groups, child marriage and veil system.

This was the first grassroots comics workshop in Karnataka. This was jointly organized by Centre of Development and Learning (CDL). Participants from all over the state arrived to attend it. Two participants each from Pune and Goa were also there. Apart from NGO's activists, many mass communication students learnt the art of making comics in this workshop
2003 Bastar, Chhattisgarh
WCI with Charkha organised this dedicated comics workshop in this new state. Apart from local participants, two participants arrived from Maharashtra. During this five day preliminary workshop the art of 4-panel comics making was introduced to the participants. Now WCI is planning a number of comics workshop in the state.

This workshop was conducted in association with the social wing of FICCI. The participants were the activists working in the slum settlements on issues related to HIV/AIDS. Comic wall posters were created and the concept of wall posters is stil being used in their campaigns.
2003 Alwar, Rajasthan
In this workshop, conducted in association with MMSVS, the comics drawn by the participants were taken to the villages, put to test for comprehension by the local villagers. The feedback was later incorporated in the comics.
2003 Aizawl, Mizoram
This was a follow-up workshop in association with MAS and Charkha. The participants addressed the issues of health, jhoom cultivation, and environment.
2003 Delhi
A comics workshop was organized with Gandhi Smriti, Delhi for children. 35 children from an orphanage and from other Delhi NGOs also participated.
2003 Chaibasa, Jharkhand
This was a follow-up exercise in which the earlier participants who were now the trainers conducted the workshop. Participants were from distant areas and states like MP. The workshop was organized by WCI, WCF, and JOHAR.
2003 Hoshangabad, MP
This WCI-WCF follow-up exercise was conducted in association with Gram Seva Samiti, a Gandhian organization working mainly on issues related to agriculture, patent rights, women and girl child. After this workshop, dedicated comics wall posters were planned. Now the people have come up with an indigenous wall-poster "Binna" in which comic strips are used regularly. More trainers were coordinated as a part of this workshop
2003 Jamshedpur, Jharkhand
The workshop was conducted in association with JOHAR and WCF. The participants were from Bihar and Jharkhand. 8 Page comic book format was introduced in this workshop. Activists have started making their own comic books.
2003 Aizawl, Mizoram
This follow-up workshop was conducted in association with MAS and WCF. The entire workshop was conducted with the trainers. It was in this workshop that the poster "kawhhumuhtu" was conceptualized to involve people's contribution. Leif Packelen and Maatti Hadelberg, noted cartoonists from Finland were there to share their skills with the trainers. Feedbacks from the remote villages were taken to assess response to the comics.
2002 Aizawl, Mizoram
Visual communication has been a successful means to reach out to people where illiteracy is a barrier. It was a new experience to organize comics-workshop in far northeastern state. Being the second most literate state of the country, Mizoram was different in many ways and it was also new for WCI as its previous experience of working was in low literacy states. Comics and cartoon word were very new for the locals and its use as communication tool was beyond their imagination. The response of this workshop was overwhelming. A comics-division with in the host organization Mizoram Artists’ Society (MAS) was also formed.
2002 Delhi
This was WCI's first workshop in a metro city. A group of girls and boys from an old Delhi muhhalla were trained in comics skill. The workshop was jointly organized by SARAI which focuses on the role of new media in community development

A comics – writing workshop for grassroots activists was organised here in association with MMSVS (full form and activities). Local NGO's activists learnt how to use comics and cartoons to address serious social issues.

A comics – writing workshop for grassroots activists. Local NGOs like Seva Mandir and Astha who are working in communication and education field sent their participants.The participants learnt how to use comics art for communication. Seva Mandir has started printing their own wall poster (name of the poster).

This workshop was also dedicated for women sarpanchs and grassroots activist. After this workshop, organized in association with most of the participants started producing their own Deevaar Akhbaar (wall poster) in their respective villages. Everyone was excited about the new communication tool- comics.

This was WCI-Charkha’s follow up workshop in the far northeastern state. This time along with the participants from the last workshop, people from far flung districts also attended it. This workshop was organised with MAS “comics division”. Now MAS is planning to print comics wall posters.

This workshop was conducted in association with Charkha for the activists. Through comic stories issues related to Panchayati Raj, Gender and allied issues were addressed.
2002 Karasanoor, Tamil Nadu
This was the second workshop in the region after WCI started co-operation with WCF and Tamil Nadu based organization VCDS. A special workshop on comics was conducted at Tindivanam in Tamilnadu. Participants were from Tamil Nadu as well as from other states like Karnataka, Mizoram, MP and Jharkhand. In Tamil Nadu trained comics artists/activists have published their own educational comics book.

This time a workshop dedicated completely to comics was organised. During this, low cost comics book and wall-poster techniques were introduced. SOHARD hosted this workshop.
2001 Karasanoor, Tamil Nadu
After last four annual workshops, it was decided to introduce this workshop as a “Training of trainers” (ToT) programme. The major aim was to make the trainers familiar with the easy to learn techniques of comic art. Participants from remote areas of the state were there.Again a four-member team from Jharkhand was invited to attend this ToT program. VCDS was the host organisation.

2000 Neemrana, Rajasthan
This was the follow-up workshop. Most of the participants were from the previous workshop. Second level of the comics-making art was introduced there. Here, also participants started producing their community wall-newspaper on developmental and local issues. SOHARD, the host organisation, focusses mainly on panchayati raj, gender and health issues.
2000 Karasanoor,Tamil Nadu
Annual comics workshop was conducted at Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu. This time new resource persons from Finland were there to impart comic’s skill in participants. A team of grassroot activists from Jharkhand also attended this workshop. One of the aims of this workshop was to ‘train the trainers’. VCDS was the host organisation.
1999 Chaibasa, Bihar (then)
Worth mentioning here is a cartooning workshop for activists and students organised with the Jharkhandis Organisation for Human Rights [JOHAR] at Chaibasa [Jharkhand] in 1999. JOHAR mainly works on human rights and other issues related to the tribals. The participants were introduced to the potential of comics as an effective means to voice their thoughts.
1999 Neemrana, Rajasthan
This was the extension of Charkha’s writing workshop series with visual communication. World Comics India introduced its unique comics formats. Grassroots activists and women village heads sarpanch participated in this workshop.
1999 Karasanoor,Tamil Nadu
This was the year when World Comics India started co-operation with World Comics Finland (WCF) and Tamil Nadu based organization Village Community Development Society (VCDS) working for women and dalit issues mainly. A special workshop on comics was conducted at Tindivanam in Tamilnadu. Since 1997 annual comics-workshops have been organised in Tamilnadu. Trained comics artists/activists have published their own comics book.
1999 Lunkaransar, Bikaner, Rajasthan
This workshop was also dedicated for women sarpanchs. It aimed at providing them with an effective medium of communication to help them counter the traditional roadblocks. After this workshop most of the participants started producing their own Deevaar Akhbaar (wall newspaper) in their respective villages. URMUL, an organization working in western Rajasthan on women, girl child, health and education issues mainly, was the host organisation.
