Fake video clips featuring a Bollywood actress and
the Prime Minister of India have caused immense

concern. Such deepfake videos hold the potential
to wreak havoc. Deepfake technology, capable
of producing highly convincing fake videos or

audio, carries signi cant risks of misuse, leading
to widespread confusion and harm.

e capacity to manipulate videos to portray
individuals saying or doing things they never

actually did poses serious threats, including the
spread of false information, reputation damage,

and incitement of social or political unrest.

Section 66D of the IT Act punishes individuals who use communication

devices or computer resources with malicious intent, leading to
impersonation or cheating. An o ence under this provision carries a
penalty of up to three years imprisonment and/or a ne of 1 lakh.

Further, Sections 67, 67A, and 67B of the IT Act can be used to prosecute
individuals for publishing or transmitting deepfakes that are obscene or

contain any sexually explicit acts.
